Abban ibn Sa'id ibn al-As

Abbān ibn Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ was a respected elder of the Banū Umayya clan of Quraysh and a first cousin of ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān, their fathers, Saʿīd and ʿAffān, being brothers. When ʿUthmān was sent to Makkah as the Prophet's ﷺ envoy during the standoff at al-Ḥudaybiyyah (6 AH) and was turned back at the road of Baldaḥ by Qurashī guards who mocked him, Abbān, present among them, stepped in on his cousin's behalf. He dismounted, put ʿUthmān on his own horse and saddle as a public mark of honour, and extended him formal protection (amān), personally escorting him into the city and to the gathering of Qurashī leaders so he could deliver his message. Abbān later embraced Islam and became a Companion, serving the early Muslim state before dying in one of its campaigns.
