Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa

ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Awfā was a Companion who preserved and later transmitted the Prophet's ﷺ night-time supplication (duʿā') against the Confederates from the Battle of the Trench (5 AH). Roughly thirty years later, during the wars against the Khawārij in the era of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib's khilāfah, he wrote to the Muslim forces preparing to face the Khawārij, relaying both the Prophet's ﷺ counsel, not to wish for confrontation with an enemy, but to stand firm with patience if forced into it, since Paradise lies in the shade of swords, and the specific duʿā' the Prophet ﷺ had made against the Aḥzāb on the night of the storm, so that it could be used again in their own battle.
