ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما was the son of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb and one of the most prolific narrators of ḥadīth. He grew up in Islam from childhood and was known throughout his life for his extreme scrupulousness in following the Sunnah. At the time of the Battle of Badr (2 AH), he was under 14 years old, the minimum age the Prophet ﷺ allowed for military participation. He presented himself and was eager to fight, but the Prophet ﷺ reviewed the army upon first encampment and turned him back along with al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib. He later participated in Uḥud (3 AH) and every subsequent major battle. He was known for his extraordinary devotion to ʿibādah and for his strict avoidance of anything he could not trace back definitively to the Prophet's ﷺ practice. He narrated over 2,600 ḥadīths.
