Abu Basir

Abū Baṣīr ʿUtbah ibn Usayd was a Muslim of Makkah, of a clan allied with Quraysh, who became the first man to flee to Madinah after the Treaty of al-Ḥudaybiyyah (6 AH). Bound by the treaty's return-of-defectors clause, the Prophet ﷺ handed him back to the two men Quraysh sent for him, telling him to be patient and that Allah would make a way out. On the road at Dhū al-Ḥulayfah, Abū Baṣīr flattered one escort into showing off his sword, seized it, killed him, and sent the other fleeing back to Madinah. Understanding the Prophet ﷺ could neither keep nor protect him under the treaty, the Prophet ﷺ hinting only that he was a formidable fighter who could not be helped, Abū Baṣīr slipped away and established an independent camp on the coast south of Jeddah, near the Qurashi caravan route to Syria. Joined by Abū Jandal and, in time, some seventy to eighty escaped converts who could not reach Madinah, he turned the camp into a force that harried Quraysh's caravans until Quraysh themselves begged the Prophet ﷺ to absorb the group into Madinah, voiding the very clause they had insisted upon. Abū Baṣīr died of illness just as the Prophet's ﷺ recall letter reached him, and was buried at the camp.
