Addas

ʿAddās was a Christian slave living in Makkah, the servant of one of the Prophet's uncles, and the only practising, pure Christian in the city. He was of Roman background. According to one version of the story of the first revelation, Khadijah رضي الله عنها first went to him before going to Waraqah ibn Nawfal, and described to him what had happened to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in the cave. ʿAddās said with amazement: "The angel of Allah appeared here, in Makkah, among these idols?", and identified what the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم had described as the coming of an angel. His response helped Khadijah understand that this was something related to the lineage of the prophets.

ʿAddās appears again later in the Seerah at the incident of Ṭāʾif, it was he who brought the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم grapes when the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was at his most wounded and rejected point outside Ṭāʾif. Upon hearing the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم say bismillāh before eating, ʿAddās was moved to tears, recognised him as coming from the lineage of prophets, and embraced Islam.
