Biography

Al-ʿĀṣ ibn Wāʾil was a rich and powerful chief of Quraysh, of the clan of Banu Sahm, and the father of the companion ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ. His refusal to pay a Yemeni merchant of Zubaid for goods he had bought, trusting in his own power and the man's friendlessness in Mecca, was the wrong that provoked the Pact of Ḥilf al-Fuḍūl.

Significance

The oppressor whose injustice to a stranger occasioned the noble covenant of Ḥilf al-Fuḍūl.
