Al-Hakam ibn Hazn

Al-Ḥakam ibn Ḥazn came with about nine men of his tribe, Banū Kulf, and told the Prophet ﷺ plainly why: جِئْنَاكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ, we have come to you so that you may pray for us for every good. That was the whole errand.

He reports that the Prophet ﷺ made duʿāʾ for them, housed them, fed them, and that they stayed some days in Madinah and prayed one Jumuʿah with him, he saw him deliver the khuṭbah leaning on a staff or a bow. Of that sermon he remembered one sentence, and it is corroborated elsewhere, its root being in al-Bukhārī: you will never be able to do everything you have been commanded, وَلَٰكِنْ سَدِّدُوا وَقَارِبُوا, but aim true and come as close as you can.

His is one narration in the whole corpus, and it is the kind of thing that only a delegate could preserve: what a single Jumuʿah in the Year of Delegations sounded like to a stranger hearing it once.
