Al-Harith ibn Abi Dirar

Al-Ḥārith ibn Abī Ḍirār was the chieftain of Banū al-Muṣṭaliq, a clan of Khuzāʿah settled at the pool of al-Muraysīʿ between Mecca and Medina. Following Uḥud, he began mobilizing a force to launch a surprise attack against Madinah in support of the Quraysh, prompted in part by the disruption of the trade route his tribe's territory had long profited from. The Prophet (ﷺ) learned of the plan, confirmed it through a scout, and struck first, routing the Banū al-Muṣṭaliq before they could organize. Al-Ḥārith himself fled and was not among those captured; his daughter Juwayriyyah was taken prisoner along with the rest of the tribe.

When al-Ḥārith later came to Madinah to negotiate his family and tribe's ransom, he learned that the Prophet (ﷺ) had already married Juwayriyyah and freed her, and that virtually the entire tribe had subsequently been freed by the Anṣār once they learned the Prophet's ﷺ new relatives were among the captives. Given the choice to return to her father or remain, Juwayriyyah chose to stay, a decision that so moved al-Ḥārith that he accepted Islam on the spot, followed immediately by the rest of his tribe. The Prophet (ﷺ) restored him as chieftain and returned all of the tribe's confiscated wealth and livestock.
