Al-Harith ibn Hisham

al-Ḥārith ibn Hishām ibn al-Mughīrah al-Makhzūmī was a prominent Qurayshī nobleman and the full brother of Abū Jahl, both were sons of Hishām ibn al-Mughīrah of Banū Makhzūm. He fought on the Qurayshī side at the Battle of Badr. He appears in the tafsīr of Q 8:48, which describes Shayṭān taking the physical form of Surāqah ibn Mālik al-Mudlijī to encourage the Qurayshī army before the battle. When Shayṭān turned and fled upon seeing the angelic host, al-Ḥārith seized him to prevent his retreat, whereupon Shayṭān threw him down violently, a sign to those who witnessed it that he was no ordinary human being. al-Ḥārith later embraced Islām at the Conquest of Makkah in 8 AH and became a respected Companion. He died during the plague of Amwās (18 AH / 639 CE) while participating in the Muslim campaigns in Syria.
