Al-Harith ibn Umayr al-Azdi

Al-Ḥārith ibn ʿUmayr al-Azdī was sent north by the Prophet ﷺ as an envoy, likely carrying a message toward the Roman Emperor Heraclius. Captured en route by the Ghassānids, he identified himself clearly as an ambassador, a status that should have guaranteed his safety under the near-universal custom of the time, but their chieftain Shuraḥbīl ibn ʿAmr had him bound and tortured before personally killing him. His death is identified as the immediate cause of the Battle of Mu'tah.
