Al-Jadd ibn Qays

One of the elite of the Khazraj and of the circle of ʿAbdullāh ibn Ubayy, a hypocrite who remained so his whole life. When the Prophet ﷺ personally invited him to the Tabūk expedition, "Would you not campaign against the Romans, O Jadd?", he begged off with a flimsy excuse: that he had a weakness for women and feared he could not restrain himself if he saw the Byzantine women, the Banāt Banī al-Aṣfar. The Prophet ﷺ turned away from him, and Allāh exposed the excuse in the Qurʾān: مِنْهُم مَّن يَقُولُ ائْذَن لِّي وَلَا تَفْتِنِّي, "among them is he who says, 'Grant me leave and do not tempt me', surely into the fitnah they have fallen" (9:49).
