Al-Walid ibn Utbah

Al-Walīd ibn ʿUtbah was the son of ʿUtbah ibn Rabīʿah and a young Qurashī fighter who participated in the Battle of Badr (2 AH) on the side of the Quraysh. When his father ʿUtbah, enraged by Abū Jahl's taunt of cowardice, stepped forward for the Mubārazah (pre-battle duel), al-Walīd was called forward alongside him and his uncle Shaybah ibn Rabīʿah. The three fought against the three Muslim champions chosen by the Prophet ﷺ: ʿUbaydah ibn al-Ḥārith, Ḥamzah ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, and ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib. Al-Walīd, being the youngest of the three Qurashī fighters, was paired against ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib. ʿAlī killed him quickly, sustaining no injuries himself. His father ʿUtbah and uncle Shaybah also died in the same duel.
