Al-Yaman ibn al-Hakam

Al-Yamān ibn al-Ḥakam (also known as al-Yamān ibn Jābir) was the father of Ḥudhayfah ibn al-Yamān. Originally from the Banū ʿAbs tribe, he had killed a man among his own people and fled to Madīnah to escape retribution. He was adopted and sheltered by the Anṣār and settled there. He accepted Islam and became a Ṣaḥābī. Before the Battle of Badr (2 AH), he and his son Ḥudhayfah were intercepted and captured by the Quraish while traveling. The Quraish agreed to release them only on the condition that they would never fight against Quraysh alongside the Prophet ﷺ. Father and son gave their word and were released. The Prophet ﷺ, upon hearing this, upheld their promise and did not allow them to participate in Badr. Al-Yamān was later killed accidentally by friendly fire at the Battle of Uḥud (3 AH), Muslim Companions who did not recognize him in the heat of battle struck him. Ḥudhayfah immediately forgave them and donated the blood-money (diyah) as ṣadaqah.
