Amir ibn al-Adhbat al-Ashja'i

A man of the tribe of Ashjaʿ who had accepted Islām while his people had not, a secret Muslim. On a small expedition before the Conquest of Makkah he came upon a Muslim contingent and, delighted, greeted them with as-salāmu ʿalaykum, the mark of a believer. One of the party, Muḥallim ibn Jaththāmah, nursed a jāhiliyyah vendetta against him, dismissed his greeting as a ruse to save his life and property, and killed him for his belongings. His killing was the occasion for the revelation of Sūrat al-Nisāʾ 4:94, warning the believers not to deny a man's faith for the goods of this world.
