Uncle and guardian of Khadijah رضي الله عنها
Biography
ʿAmr ibn Asad was the uncle of Khadijah رضي الله عنها and, since her father had died before the time of her marriage to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, ʿAmr became her marriage guardian (walī). When Abu Ṭālib came with the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and delivered the khuṭbah of proposal, praising Allah, speaking of the noble lineage of Quraysh and the character of his nephew, and offering a mahr of twelve ʿuqiyyah wa niṣṣan, it was ʿAmr ibn Asad who stood and responded: 'This is a young man who cannot be refused. We accept.'
Significance
As Khadijah's walī he gave formal consent to the marriage at the Nikah gathering, completing the valid contract of the most consequential marriage in Islamic history.
