Attab ibn Asid

عَتَّاب بْن أَسِيد

ʿAttāb ibn Asīd

Biography

One of the Qurayshī elite standing with Abū Sufyān as Bilāl gave the adhān from the Kaʿbah; in his Jāhilī pride he said he was glad his father Asīd had died before seeing 'this black man' raised above them. When the Prophet later repeated his words back to him verbatim he accepted Islam, and the Prophet appointed him governor over Makkah when he departed, a young man set over the city of his elders.

Significance

A proud Qurashī whose conversion the Prophet ﷺ won by quoting his secret words; left in charge of Makkah after the Conquest.
