Attab ibn Asid
عَتَّاب بْن أَسِيدʿAttāb ibn Asīd
Biography
One of the Qurayshī elite standing with Abū Sufyān as Bilāl gave the adhān from the Kaʿbah; in his Jāhilī pride he said he was glad his father Asīd had died before seeing 'this black man' raised above them. When the Prophet ﷺ later repeated his words back to him verbatim he accepted Islam, and the Prophet ﷺ appointed him governor over Makkah when he departed, a young man set over the city of his elders.
Significance
A proud Qurashī whose conversion the Prophet ﷺ won by quoting his secret words; left in charge of Makkah after the Conquest.
