Awf ibn Afra

ʿAwf ibn ʿAfrāʾ (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhu) was one of the young Anṣārī Companions from the Khazraj, son of a righteous woman named ʿAfrāʾ who was so renowned that all her children were known by her name. He and his brother Muʿawwidh ibn ʿAfrāʾ were among the most eager volunteers at the Battle of Badr (17 Ramaḍān 2 AH). When ʿUtbah ibn Rabīʿah stepped forward for the Mubārazah and called for Qurashī opponents, ʿAwf, Muʿawwidh, and ʿAbdullāh ibn Rawāḥah immediately jumped up, only to be told by ʿUtbah: 'We have no quarrel with you. Send us our own blood.' ʿAwf and Muʿawwidh were both martyred at the Battle of Badr. Their mother ʿAfrāʾ was a close friend of Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها, who had moved into ʿAfrāʾ's home for safety during the days of the battle. ʿAfrāʾ lost two sons as shuhudāʾ in a single morning.
