Ayyash ibn Abi Rabi'ah

A companion of the Prophet ﷺ and one of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb's companions for the Hijra. He was a half-brother of Abū Jahl (they shared the same mother but had different fathers), which made him a high-value target for Qurayshi manipulation. When he, ʿUmar, and Hishām ibn al-ʿĀṣ planned to emigrate together, Hishām was captured at the last moment and could not make it; ʿAyyāsh and ʿUmar proceeded to Madinah alone.

Shortly after arriving, Abū Jahl and his brother came to Madinah and told ʿAyyāsh that his mother had sworn to stay in the sun until she saw him again, she could not eat, was covered in lice, and was on the verge of death. ʿUmar warned him: "They are tricking you. If your mother has lice she can shave her head; if she is hungry she can eat, do not go back." He offered ʿAyyāsh money from his own wealth and even gave him his faster camel. Despite all of this, ʿAyyāsh's love for his mother overcame him. On the road, Abū Jahl tricked him into dismounting by claiming his camel was tired, then seized and bound him. ʿAyyāsh was brought back to Makkah in chains and imprisoned with Hishām ibn al-ʿĀṣ in a specially built dungeon. He remained imprisoned until al-Walīd ibn al-Walīd rescued him in a daring night raid into Makkah.
