Al-Dajjāl

The greatest trial near the Day of Judgment

Al-Masīḥ al-DajjālAl-Aʿwar (the one-eyed)

Biography

Al-Dajjāl is a human being who will appear near the end of times and claim to be divine, performing spectacular but false miracles to deceive humanity. He is the greatest trial (fitnah) ever to befall mankind. The Prophet said: 'From the creation of Adam until the Day of Judgment, there is no trial greater than Dajjal.'

Physical description (from multiple ahadith): He has one functioning eye and one that is bloated and non-functional, he is A'war (الأعور). The Prophet specifically said his left eye is like a rotten, dried-up grape. The Prophet saw Dajjal during the night of Isrāʾ wal-Miʿrāj and said this about the eye description: 'I tell you something about Dajjal that no other prophet has told his Ummah.'

He will be killed by ʿĪsā ibn Maryam Alayhi Salām when ʿĪsā descends near Jerusalem.

Significance

His sighting during Isrāʾ wal-Miʿrāj is part of the Prophet's ﷺ witnessing all the pillars of Imān in concrete form, including signs of the Day of Judgment
