Durayd ibn al-Simmah

An ancient, blind former chieftain and famed warrior-poet, brought to Ḥunayn led by the hand so the tribes might have the blessing of his presence and wisdom. Hearing infants cry and flocks bleat, he rebuked the young Mālik ibn ʿAwf for bringing women, children and herds to war, "a man who is to lose is not saved by his family behind him; battle is men with swords", and, learning that the shrewdest sub-tribes had stayed away, urged retreat, or at least sending the families back to the fortress. He was overruled. His counsel is remembered as the wisdom of age against the folly of youthful zeal.
