Habbar ibn Al-Aswad

Habbār ibn al-Aswad ibn al-Muṭṭalib ibn ʿAbd Manāf al-Qurashī was a distant cousin of Zaynab bint Muḥammad (the Prophet's daughter). He is remembered in the Seerah primarily for his vicious act against Zaynab during her attempted return to Madinah approximately one month after the Battle of Badr.

When Zaynab's brother-in-law Kinānah (brother of Abū al-ʿĀṣ) attempted to escort her out of Makkah in broad daylight, a group of Quraysh gathered to prevent her departure. Habbār ibn al-Aswad was the one who thrust a spear at Zaynab's camel. The frightened camel reared, throwing Zaynab, who was pregnant at the time, approximately fifteen feet to the ground. She suffered a miscarriage as a direct result. The physical injuries from this fall are said to have stayed with her and contributed to her death a few years later (she was the second of the Prophet's daughters to die, after Ruqayyah, dying in 8 AH).

Dr. Yaṣir Qāḍī notes that Habbār later accepted Islam. More remarkably, his grandson was among those who accompanied Muḥammad ibn Qāsim in the conquest of Sindh (712 CE / 93 AH), and that grandson's lineage founded the Habbārid Dynasty which ruled over Makrān, Sindh, and Mansūra for over two hundred years, minting coins and becoming one of the most significant Muslim ruling dynasties of early Sindh, before their fall to the Fatimid Ismāʿīlīs and subsequent Sunnī restoration under Maḥmūd of Ghaznah.
