Harithah ibn Suraqah

Ḥārithah ibn Surāqah al-Anṣārī al-Khazrajī was one of the young Companions of the Prophet ﷺ who participated in the Battle of Badr (17 Ramaḍān 2 AH / 624 CE). He is recorded among the earliest martyrs of the battle, killed by a stray arrow that came seemingly from nowhere while the armies were forming up near the wells of Badr.

The most significant narration about Ḥārithah is recorded in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī. His mother, an Anṣārī woman from Madinah, came to the Prophet ﷺ after the battle with a mother's most urgent question: 'Tell me about my son. Is he in Jannah?' The Prophet ﷺ replied: 'My dear aunt, it is not a single Jannah he is in, he is in Jinān (many gardens) and he is in al-Firdaws al-Aʿlā.' Not just Jannah, but the highest level of Jannah.

His story is cited in the Seerah and in books of Faḍāʾil al-Ṣaḥābah as one of the clearest demonstrations of the special status of the People of Badr (Ahl Badr). A young man killed by a stray arrow, not even in direct combat, is elevated to al-Firdaws al-Aʿlā purely because he was present at Badr and was counted among its participants.
