Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman

Ḥudhayfah ibn al-Yamān رضي الله عنه is one of the most distinguished Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, known above all as Ṣāḥib al-Sirr, the Keeper of the Prophet's Secrets. The Prophet ﷺ confided to him the identities of all the Munāfiqūn (hypocrites) in Madīnah. His father al-Yamān was not originally from Makkah or Madīnah, he had fled his tribe (Banū ʿAbs) after a killing and settled in Madīnah, where he was adopted by the Anṣār and embraced Islam. Ḥudhayfah himself was born and raised in Madīnah, affiliated with the Aws through his father's adoption. Before Badr, Ḥudhayfah and his father were intercepted by the Quraish while traveling. The Quraish offered to release them on one condition: they must promise never to fight against Quraysh alongside the Prophet ﷺ. They gave their word and were released. When they returned to Madīnah and told the Prophet ﷺ, he honored their promise completely: neither of them participated in Badr or any subsequent offensive expedition against the Quraish. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'We will uphold your promise to them and we will seek Allah's help against them.' Ḥudhayfah later became enormously important in the Islamic state, he fought in subsequent battles, was sent to check on the Persian frontline, and his narrations about the Munāfiqūn shaped Islamic political theology for generations.
