Al-ʿIrbāḍ ibn Sāriya
الْعِرْبَاض بْن سَارِيَةal-ʿIrbāḍ ibn Sāriya
Biography
A poor Companion, one of Ahl al-Ṣuffah, counted among the Bakkāʾūn, the "Weepers", a small band who came to the Prophet ﷺ for a mount to Tabūk and, when he had none left to give (لَا أَجِدُ مَا أَحْمِلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ), turned away with their eyes overflowing in grief that they could find nothing to spend in Allāh's cause (9:92). He lived long, a well-known narrator of ḥadīth.
Significance
Named among the Bakkāʾūn of Tabūk, the poor believers whose tears at being unable to march are immortalized in Qurʾān 9:92, the mirror-opposite of the rejoicing hypocrites.
