Jarir ibn Abdillah al-Bajali

Jarīr ibn ʿAbdillāh al-Bajalī was a companion whose narration defines the boundary of permissible mourning in Islam: he related that the companions considered it a form of the forbidden niyāḥah (wailing) for people to gather at the house of the deceased and for that household to prepare food for the visitors, the obligation runs the other way, with the community feeding the grieving family, not the reverse.
