Biography
Khabbāb ibn al-Aratt رضي الله عنه was one of the earliest Muslims, from the servant or slave class who had no tribal protection in Makkah. He was a blacksmith and iron-forger. He was tortured by his master Umm Anmār and her allies, including having burning hot iron pressed against his back, for refusing to renounce Islām. He came to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and complained about the persecution, asking when relief would come. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: 'The people before you had their flesh combed off with iron combs, yet it did not weaken their faith. By Allah, this matter will be completed until a rider will travel from Ṣanʿāʾ to Ḥaḍramawt fearing nothing but Allah.' Despite the torture, he persisted, and he narrated many hadith about the early period of Islām.
