Khalid ibn Sa'id ibn al-'As

خَالِدُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْعَاصِ

Khālid ibn Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ

Biography

Khālid ibn Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ was a senior Qurashī Companion and a distant cousin of the Prophet . When the delegation of Thaqīf came to Madinah in Ramaḍān of 9 AH, he was chosen as the emissary between them and the Prophet , following the custom by which two principals do not meet until their terms have been worked out at a lower level. For the ten or more days of negotiation he carried the questions and answers back and forth between the tent pitched for the delegation inside the masjid and the Prophet ﷺ.

The delegates, sick with guilt over the killing of their own ʿUrwah ibn Masʿūd and fearful of retaliation, suspected their food was poisoned and would not touch a meal until Khālid had eaten from it in front of them first, which he did, at every meal.

Significance

The go-between of the most consequential delegation of the Year of Delegations, and the man who ate first from every dish to reassure a delegation too guilt-ridden to trust its hosts
