Khubayb ibn Adi

Khubayb ibn ʿAdī was one of the ten Companions sent as Qurʾān and prayer teachers to the tribes of ʿUḍal and al-Qārah under a false pretense of conversion, a trap that led to the massacre at ar-Rajīʿ (Muḥarram 4 AH). One of only three survivors of the initial ambush, he surrendered along with Zayd ibn al-Dathinnah after seven of their companions had been killed, on a promise of safety that proved false. He was sold to the Banū al-Ḥārith in Mecca, who held a blood grievance against him from Badr, and held prisoner until his execution.

Before his death he asked to be allowed a ghusl and a razor to be clean when he met Allah. While he held the razor, a small child of the household crawled up to him; when the terrified mother cried out, he told her he would never harm the boy, and she later testified she had never seen a prisoner of more noble character, describing him eating bunches of grapes that had no natural source in Mecca at the time, a karāmah. Before his execution he asked to pray two rakʿahs, explaining he would have prayed longer had he not feared it would look like fear of death, establishing what became the Sunnah of praying two rakʿahs before an execution.
