Kinanah ibn Ar-Rabi

Kinānah ibn ar-Rabīʿ ibn ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā al-ʿAbshamī was the younger brother of Abū al-ʿĀṣ ibn ar-Rabīʿ, the husband of Zaynab bint Muḥammad. He plays a memorable role in the Seerah during Zaynab's attempted return to Madinah approximately one month after the Battle of Badr (2 AH).

Abū al-ʿĀṣ, too emotionally distressed to escort his own wife, asked his brother Kinānah to take Zaynab out of Makkah. Kinānah made the poor decision to depart in broad daylight, news spread immediately, and a group of Quraysh gathered to intercept them. When Habbār ibn al-Aswad thrust a spear at the camel and sent Zaynab crashing to the ground, a standoff ensued.

Kinānah stood over the fallen Zaynab, drew his bow, and declared: "I swear by Allah, whoever approaches first will taste my arrow before you touch me." The crowd fell back. Abū Sufyān rode out, dispersed the situation, and told Kinānah to return with Zaynab and try again at night. A few days later, Kinānah successfully delivered Zaynab under cover of darkness to the companions the Prophet ﷺ had sent to wait outside Makkah.
