Mahmud ibn Maslamah

Maḥmūd ibn Maslamah al-Anṣārī was one of the Anṣār and the brother of Muḥammad ibn Maslamah. He marched with the Prophet ﷺ to Khaybar in 7 AH and fought in the long siege of the fortress of al-Nāʿim, the largest of Khaybar's strongholds, which resisted the Muslims for ten days. Siege warfare was entirely new to the Muslims, who had never before faced fortified walls, arrow slits, and defenders hurling heavy objects from above. Maḥmūd came too close to the wall, and the defenders dropped a great log upon him, crushing him. He died a shahīd, and his death was deeply demoralizing for the besieging companions.
