Muawwidh ibn Afra

Muʿawwidh ibn ʿAfrāʾ (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhu) was a young Anṣārī Companion from the Khazraj, the brother of ʿAwf ibn ʿAfrāʾ. Both were sons of ʿAfrāʾ, a righteous woman so famous that her children were known by her name. Muʿawwidh was one of the three young Anṣār who immediately volunteered for the Mubārazah when ʿUtbah called out, alongside ʿAwf and ʿAbdullāh ibn Rawāḥah, only to be told the Quraysh wanted to fight their own kin. During the main battle, Muʿawwidh was one of two fighters who mortally wounded Abū Jahl. Working alongside Muʿādh ibn ʿAmr al-Jumūḥ (a different Anṣārī), the two darted through the army to where Abū Jahl stood protected in a grove with ʿIkrimah ibn Abī Jahl as bodyguard. Muʿādh severed Abū Jahl's leg; Muʿawwidh then struck him on the body. Muʿawwidh was martyred at Badr shortly after this act of courage. The Prophet ﷺ later examined both their swords and declared: 'Both of you have killed him.' Muʿawwidh's mother ʿAfrāʾ lost two sons, Muʿawwidh and ʿAwf, as shuhudāʾ on the same day. Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها was living in ʿAfrāʾ's home when the battle took place.
