Mughith

مُغِيث

Mughīth

Biography

Mughīth was a slave in Medina, married to Barīrah while both were enslaved. When ʿĀʾishah freed Barīrah, the Sharīʿah gave her the choice of keeping or dissolving the marriage, and she chose to leave him. Mughīth loved her intensely and would follow her through the streets of Medina weeping and pleading, while she would not so much as glance at him. The Prophet was moved to intercede for him, and Barīrah's response to that intercession became a foundational lesson on the difference between the Prophet's command and his mere recommendation.

Significance

His unrequited love for Barirah occasioned the Prophet's ﷺ statement that he was interceding, not commanding, the key to understanding non-binding prophetic recommendations
