Muhallim ibn Jaththamah

A man on one of the small expeditions before the Conquest of Makkah who carried a personal grudge against ʿĀmir ibn al-Adhbaṭ al-Ashjaʿī from the days of jāhiliyyah. When ʿĀmir greeted the Muslims with salām, Muḥallim rejected his Islām as a pretence, killed him, and seized his property, for which Allāh exposed his true motive in Sūrat al-Nisāʾ 4:94. After both tribes accepted Islām they brought the case to the Prophet ﷺ following Ḥunayn; he paid a diyah of a hundred camels on the killer's behalf, but when asked to seek Allāh's forgiveness for Muḥallim he refused, one of the very few times he ever did so. It is related that Muḥallim died within days, and that the earth would not hold his body until his people covered it with stones, upon which the Prophet ﷺ said the earth covers up worse men than him, but that Allāh meant to teach them the sanctity of life.
