Mukhayriqu

Mukhayrīq was a Jewish scholar from one of the Jewish tribes of Medina. The Battle of Uḥud fell on a Saturday, and when he urged his people to honour their treaty obligation to fight alongside the Muslims, they refused, citing the prohibition on fighting on the Sabbath. Mukhayrīq declared "Lā sabta lakum, may you have no Sabbath after this," took his armor and sword, and marched to Uḥud alone. His motivation was not religious conversion but covenant loyalty, he believed they had taken a solemn ʿahd with the Prophet (ﷺ) that bound them. Before leaving, he told his people that if he died, all his property should go to Muḥammad (ﷺ), explicitly excluding his own people because they had broken their promise. He fought bravely and was martyred at Uḥud. The Prophet (ﷺ) praised him: "Mukhayrīqu khayru Yahūd, Mukhayrīq is the best of all the Jews," honouring him as the Prophet had honoured Muṭʿim ibn ʿAdiyy, illustrating the Islamic principle of praising anyone who acts with integrity, Muslim or non-Muslim.
