Al-Muthanna ibn Haritha
الْمُثَنَّى بْن حَارِثَةAl-Muthannā ibn Ḥāritha
Military chief of Banu Shayban · Commander in the early Islamic conquest of Iraq/Persia
Biography
Al-Muthannā ibn Ḥāritha al-Shaybānī was the military chief of the Banu Shayban ibn Thaʿlabah. When the Prophet ﷺ met the Banu Shayban during the Hajj season (10th year of Da'wah), Muthanna was the military voice of the tribe alongside the elder Hānī ibn Qays.
Muthanna raised a practical strategic concern: the Banu Shayban had a neutrality treaty with Kisra (the Sassanid Emperor), and any support for the Prophet ﷺ against the Sassanid sphere would violate it. He said they could only help the Prophet ﷺ in dealings with the Arabs, not against Kisra. This was an honest military assessment. The Prophet ﷺ said this condition was unacceptable, "Allah's Deen will only be helped by those who embrace it fully."
The Prophet ﷺ then offered Muthanna and the tribe something extraordinary: he told them that if they believed, Allah would give them victory over Kisra, that they would enjoy the palaces, the land, and the wealth of the Sassanid Empire. Muthanna did not believe this was possible, so the Banu Shayban declined.
Later in life, after the conquest of Mecca and the death of the Prophet ﷺ, Muthanna ibn Ḥāritha became one of the most important commanders of the Islamic army in Iraq. He was among the key figures fighting the Sassanid forces. The Prophet's ﷺ prophecy came true, the same tribe he spoke to were the ones who, in their own lifetime, helped bring down the Persian Empire.
Significance
Living proof of the Prophet's ﷺ Yaqeen (certainty in Allah) in a desperate situation; the prophecy about Kisra was directed specifically at him and his tribe, and it came true for them personally
