Nafisa
نَفِيسَةNafīsa
Companion and friend of Khadijah رضي الله عنها
Biography
Nafīsa was an elderly woman of Makkah, a trusted friend or servant of Khadijah رضي الله عنها. When Khadijah felt she wished to marry the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, she confided in Nafīsa, who arranged the approach. Nafīsa visited the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and asked him why he had not married. He replied that he was the orphan and poor man of the Quraysh, who would want him? She then said: what if Khadijah wished to marry him? He did not decline; he only said, with wonder, 'Why would she want me?', and Nafīsa carried his response back to Khadijah, setting the marriage in motion.
Significance
Her tactful intermediation between Khadijah رضي الله عنها and the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم made possible the marriage that would produce all of his children and provide the first believer and his greatest supporter.
