Nawfal ibn Al-Harith

Nawfal ibn al-Ḥārith ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib al-Hāshimī was a cousin of the Prophet ﷺ. His father al-Ḥārith ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib was the oldest son of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib (the grandfather of the Prophet ﷺ), making Nawfal a Hāshimī cousin of the Prophet and a nephew of al-ʿAbbās.

At the Battle of Badr (2 AH/624 CE), Nawfal had not yet accepted Islam and fought on the Qurayshī side. He was captured as a prisoner of war. Since he did not have the means to pay his own ransom, the Prophet ﷺ instructed al-ʿAbbās to pay the ransom on Nawfal's behalf as well, in addition to his own 4,000-Dirham ransom and that of ʿAqīl ibn Abī Ṭālib. This placed a considerable financial burden on al-ʿAbbās, which is part of why al-ʿAbbās protested that he had no money, a claim the Prophet ﷺ refuted by revealing the secret of the buried funds.

Nawfal later accepted Islam and became a Companion of the Prophet ﷺ.
