Quzman

Quzmān was a hypocrite who initially returned to Medina with ʿAbdullāh ibn Ubayy's group when they withdrew from Uḥud. He was a capable warrior but had no sincere faith. When Muslim women in Medina mocked and shamed him for abandoning the battlefield, his wounded pride, not his religion, drove him back. He returned fully armed and fought with extraordinary ferocity, such that a Ṣaḥābī came to praise him to the Prophet (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ) replied immediately: "Huwa fi-n-nār, He is in the Fire." The Ṣaḥābī was astonished and began following Quzmān to observe. Quzmān was hit by an arrow. Unable to bear the pain, he placed his sword handle on the ground with the blade upward and threw himself upon it, committing suicide on the battlefield. The Prophet (ﷺ) then said: "Innallāha layu'ayyidu hādha-d-dīna bi-r-rajuli-l-fājir, Allah sometimes supports this religion through an evil man."
