Rufaydah

رُفَيْدَةُ

Rufaydah

Biography

Rufaydah was a Companion who volunteered as the community's field nurse, maintaining a dedicated tent to treat the sick and wounded, effectively the earliest field hospital in Islamic history. During the Battle of the Trench and the subsequent siege of Banū Qurayẓah (5 AH), Saʿd ibn Muʿādh was kept in her tent for over three weeks following his fatal arrow wound, where she cleaned his wound and tended to his needs, continuing to bleed until his death shortly after judging Banū Qurayẓah's fate.

Significance

Her volunteer service caring for the wounded, including Sa'd ibn Muadh in his final weeks, represents one of the earliest organized medical roles in Islamic history
