Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas

Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ رضي الله عنه was one of the youngest of the first Muslims, about sixteen years old when Abū Bakr brought him to Islām. He was from the Banū Zuhra clan of Quraysh, the clan of the Prophet's صلى الله عليه وسلم mother Āminah.

When he accepted Islām, his mother attempted emotional blackmail to bring him back to idolatry: she stopped eating and drinking, threatening to die in front of him. He tried to persuade her, but as she weakened and neared death, he said: 'Wallāhi, O my mother, if you had a hundred souls and I had to watch every one of them leave you, I would still not leave this religion.' When she saw that resolve, she broke her fast and ate. Allah then revealed the verse of Sūrat Luqmān (31:15) in response to this incident: وَإِن جَاهَدَاكَ عَلَىٰ أَن تُشْرِكَ بِي مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِ عِلْمٌ فَلَا تُطِعْهُمَا وَصَاحِبْهُمَا فِي الدُّنْيَا مَعْرُوفًا, If they press you to associate partners with Me, do not obey them, but accompany them in this world with kindness.

Saʿd was the first person ever to shoot an arrow in the path of Islām. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said to him, and said this to no one else among all the companions: فِدَاكَ أَبِي وَأُمِّي, 'May my father and mother be given as your ransom.' He was one of the six members chosen by ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb for the Shūrā to decide the caliphate after him, ʿUmar said he only chose those whom he was certain the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم had been well pleased with at his death.
