Biography

Salman al-Farisi, the son of a Zoroastrian fire-keeper of Persia, left his father's faith for Christianity and journeyed from teacher to teacher across Syria in search of the truth. The last of them foretold the coming of the awaited Prophet and gave him three signs: a land of date-palms, the refusal of charity but acceptance of gifts, and the seal of prophethood between the shoulders. Seeking him, Salman was betrayed into slavery and sold to the Jews of Yathrib; there he found the Prophet , confirmed the three signs, and embraced Islam, the Prophet helping to purchase his freedom. He became one of the most beloved companions.

Significance

The seeker whose long journey to the truth shows that sincerity is guided even out of the deepest Jahiliyyah.
