Read the full storyBiography
A Persian companion of the Prophet ﷺ and one of the most beloved and remarkable figures in Islamic history. Born into a Zoroastrian priestly family in Persia (modern-day Iran), Salmān spent much of his life in a spiritual search for the truth, moving from Persia to Syria to Arabia over many years, serving Christian monks and scholars who told him to look for a final prophet who would appear in a land of date palms between two lava fields.
He eventually arrived in Arabia as a slave, and through a series of events ended up in Madinah, precisely the land described. When the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Madinah, Salmān recognized the signs and accepted Islam. He did not accept Islam immediately at the beginning of the Hijra; it took him several years to reach Madinah and verify the signs. The Prophet ﷺ helped arrange for his freedom from slavery, and Salmān became one of the most honored of the Companions.
The Prophet ﷺ paired him as Mu'akhah brother with Abū al-Dardāʾ, a pairing done later in the Madani period, after Salmān's acceptance of Islam. Salmān was reported to have lived to an extremely advanced age; some narrations say he died at around 120 years of age. He is said to have been approximately 90 years old even at the time of many Madani events.
The story of Salmān and Abū al-Dardāʾ is one of the most instructive in the Seerah. Salmān visited Abū al-Dardāʾ's home and found his wife disheveled and poorly dressed. He reproached her, telling her to take care of herself for her husband. She replied that "your brother has no interest in this world." When Abū al-Dardāʾ arrived, Salmān forced him to eat (breaking his voluntary fast), and later stopped him from spending the entire night in optional Tahajjud prayer, allowing him to sleep and waking him at the end of the night. He then told him: "Your Lord has a right over you, your body has a right over you, and your family has a right over you." The Prophet ﷺ confirmed that Salmān had spoken the truth.
This story, along with Salmān's extraordinary life journey across three continents in search of truth, makes him one of the most discussed figures in Islamic literature.
The Prophet ﷺ famously said of him: "Salmān minnā Ahl al-Bayt", "Salmān is from us, the People of the Household." An extraordinary honor given to a Persian convert, expressing that the bond of faith surpasses the bond of ancestry.
