Sawad ibn Ghuzayyah

Sawād ibn Ghuzayyah (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhu) was an Anṣārī Companion who was present at the Battle of Badr (17 Ramaḍān 2 AH). He is remembered for a brief but highly memorable incident. As the Prophet ﷺ was walking between the rows of the Muslim army straightening their battle formation, tapping people with a stick to align them, as one would straighten the rows in ṣalāh, Sawād was out of position. The Prophet ﷺ poked him in the stomach with the stick to get him back in line. Sawād immediately said: 'Yā Rasūlallāh, you have caused me pain without justification. And Allāh has sent you with truth and justice. So I demand qiṣāṣ!' He said this moments before the Battle of Badr was about to begin. The Prophet ﷺ, without hesitation, dropped the stick, lifted his shirt, and said: 'Here, take your qiṣāṣ.' Sawād immediately bowed forward and kissed and embraced the Prophet's exposed skin. The Prophet ﷺ asked: 'What are you doing, O Sawād? You were supposed to take qiṣāṣ!' Sawād replied: 'Yā Rasūlallāh, you see the situation we are in. And I wanted my last contact in this world to be the touch of your skin.' The Prophet ﷺ made duʿāʾ for him. The incident is a window into the deep prophetic model of justice: even in the last moments before battle, and even for a poke with a stick, the Prophet ﷺ held himself accountable under the same Sharīʿah as the lowest infantryman.
