Sirmah the Hanif of Madinah

Ṣirmah was the only known Ḥanīf of Madinah (Yathrib). In his youth, before the birth of the Prophet ﷺ, he had openly rejected the idolatry of his people. He nearly converted to Christianity but found it unsatisfactory and declared instead he would remain upon the religion of Ibrahim. Ibn Isḥāq records that he performed Ghusl after Janābah and instructed his women to bathe after their menses, showing he had preserved elements of the Sharīʿah of Ibrahim. He composed poetry praising Ḥanīfiyyah and criticising idol worship. He was over a hundred years old when the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Madinah. Allah blessed him to embrace Islam before his death, which came shortly after conversion.
