Surad ibn Abdullah al-Azdi

Ṣurad ibn ʿAbdillāh al-Azdī was the Companion the Prophet ﷺ placed in charge of a tribe of Azd when it came in the Year of Delegations, and whom he sent against a neighbouring tribe still upon paganism, the tribe the shaykh calls Jurash for simplicity.

While two envoys of Jurash were in Madinah sounding out whether a truce was possible, Ṣurad besieged and then defeated their people. On the very day it happened, the Prophet ﷺ told the envoys that Allah's camel was being sacrificed at Jurash at that moment. Ṣurad, having won, chose to spare them, so that there was no massacre; and when the envoys got home and matched the day and the hour, the tribe took it as a sign and embraced Islam, sending a second delegation, this time not to negotiate but to accept the faith.
