Talha ibn Abi Talha

Ṭalḥah ibn Abī Ṭalḥah ibn ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā al-ʿAbdarī was from the Banū ʿAbd al-Dār clan of Quraysh, the clan entrusted with carrying the Qurayshi battle standard (the Liwāʾ). As the standard bearer and champion of the Quraysh at the Battle of Uḥud (3 AH), he stepped forward for the Mubārazah (single combat duel) and called out, 'Who will fight me?'

ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib accepted the challenge. ʿAlī had no armor; Ṭalḥah wore full body armor including gauntlets. When Ṭalḥah swung his sword, ʿAlī blocked the blow with his shield simultaneously striking downward, chopping off Ṭalḥah's leg below the armor in a single motion. Ṭalḥah collapsed. As ʿAlī approached to finish him, Ṭalḥah's robe flew up exposing his ʿawrah; he then begged by the ties of kinship (they were distant Qurayshi cousins through ʿAbd Manāf and ʿAbd al-Dār). ʿAlī, moved by a sense of murūʾah (noble dignity) and ḥayāʾ, lowered his sword and walked away. Ṭalḥah died from his wounds nonetheless.

The Banū ʿAbd al-Dār continued to carry the Qurayshi standard throughout Uḥud, each standard bearer killed, replaced by another family member, until the standard eventually fell.
