Ubadah ibn as-Samit

One of the twelve who gave the First Pledge of Aqabah (Bayʿat al-ʿAqabah al-Ūlā) in the eleventh year of the Daʿwah. He narrated the event himself in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, calling it the Bayʿat al-Nisāʾ (Women's Oath), an oath of theology and morality with no political or military connotations. The twelve pledged to worship Allāh alone, give up fornication, theft, and the killing of children, and to obey the Prophet ﷺ in all good matters. He became one of the most prominent of the Anṣār and a major narrator of hadith.

At the expulsion of Banū Qaynuqāʿ (15 Shawwāl 2 AH), ʿUbādah, himself a former pre-Islamic ally of that tribe, took the opposite position from ʿAbdullāh ibn Ubayy. He stepped forward and publicly declared to the Prophet ﷺ: 'Yā Rasūlallāh, innī atawallā Allāha wa Rasūlahu wal-muʾminīna wa abra'u min wilāyat al-kuffār', 'O Messenger of Allah, I take as my walī Allah, His Messenger, and the believers, and I renounce the alliance of the disbelievers.' He added that he would not have even given them three days to pack. Allah praised his character and censured that of ʿAbdullāh ibn Ubayy in Sūrah al-Māʾidah (5:51–56).
