ʿUlbah ibn Zayd
عُلْبَة بْن زَيْدʿUlbah ibn Zayd
Biography
A poor Companion of the Anṣār, known for one incident. When the Prophet ﷺ was collecting for Tabūk, ʿUlbah had nothing to give, and said: "Yā RasūlAllāh, I have no wealth, but I give as charity my honor, that I will defend you against any who wrong or mock you" (meaning the hypocrites). The Prophet ﷺ answered, "I have accepted your charity", a proof that even a non-monetary gift, given sincerely for Allāh's sake, is a valid ṣadaqah.
Significance
His offering of his dignity as charity, accepted by the Prophet ﷺ, is a celebrated example of the Companions' eagerness to give whatever they had.
