Umamah bint Abi al-As

Umāmah bint Abī al-ʿĀṣ ibn ar-Rabīʿ was the daughter of Zaynab bint Muḥammad and Abū al-ʿĀṣ ibn ar-Rabīʿ, making her the Prophet's ﷺ granddaughter. She and her parents also had a son who died in infancy. Umāmah is best known from a report in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī describing the Prophet ﷺ carrying her on his shoulder during prayer as a small child, setting her down when he prostrated and picking her back up when he stood, a detail preserved as evidence of both his tenderness toward children and the permissibility of such minor movement during ṣalāh. After the death of her aunt Fāṭimah bint Muḥammad, Umāmah married ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, with whom she had children.
