Umarah bint Hamzah

ʿUmārah bint Ḥamzah was the daughter of Ḥamzah ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib and Salmā bint ʿUmays, orphaned by her father's martyrdom at Uḥud. As a young girl still in Makkah, she ran to rejoin the Muslims when the Prophet (ﷺ) performed the ʿUmrah following the Treaty of Ḥudaybiyyah, not wanting to remain among the Meccans. Several Companions, among them ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, Jaʿfar ibn Abī Ṭālib, and Zayd ibn Ḥārithah, each wished to take on her guardianship, and the matter was brought to the Prophet (ﷺ), who awarded her custody to Jaʿfar on the principle that a maternal aunt holds a status like that of a mother (al-khālah bi-manzilat al-umm), Jaʿfar's wife, Asmāʾ bint ʿUmays, being ʿUmārah's maternal aunt through her mother Salmā.
